Highlights
The bears are so close, you can often see them right from your room or the deck of the Blue Heron Restaurant.
Start exploring by taking the one-hour "Get Acquainted with Zeballos" guided walking tour where you'll be introduced to our beautiful valley and its rich past. You'll see the many false-front buildings that remain from the Zeballos gold rush days of the 1930s and 1940s. You will see the handiwork of the tidal wave of 1964, and you'll visit the Zeballos Museum to view artifacts and photographs of the town's industrious youth.
A driving tour via our comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle provides many great photo opportunities. We'll visit the old cemetery to examine tombstones and watch for ghosts. Views along the Zeballos River toward the famous New Privateer Gold Mine include the former working site of the Zeballos Iron Mine, Mount Zeballos, and a spectacular vista of the canyon waterfall.
Next, we'll take a drive along the Zeballos Inlet and visit the causeway to watch a reversing tidal flow. If the tide is right, you'll see vivid purple and orange starfish that thrive in these waters.
On the return trip, we'll talk about transporting logs when we stop to view part of the "dry-land sort" area.
Have your camera ready at all times. Eagles and bears are often spotted along the streams and roadsides on our route.
Coffee, tea, juice, and a freshly-prepared chef's treat await you back at the Blue Heron.
Need more fresh air? Strike out on your own and take the self-guided Nature Trail that follows the river. The beginning of the trail is visible from Cedars Inn and is a comfortable walk for all ages. Just be sure to make some noise to warn any bears of your approach.
Although there's a 90-percent chance you'll see bears on your visit to Zeballos, you're just as likely to see eagles, ducks, swans, and a host of other wildlife that frequent the river during salmon spawning time.
Our staff will be happy to recommend other self-guided walks, activities, and excellent photographic vantage points. Just
tell us what you're after, and we'll help you find it.
First Nations culture and eco tour
Vancouver Island's west coast is rich in cultural history. Archaeological records go back thousands of years. And remnants of ancient First Nations settlements can still be seen buried in coastal rainforests. A biologist will answer your questions about inter-tidal ecology, forest habitats, and ethnobotany.
